Bioinformatics is a newly
emerging interdisciplinary research area which may be defined
as an interface between biological and computational sciences.
The word “bioinformatics” is derived by combining biology and
informatics. It has its roots in computational biology, a
field that has been driven during the last two decades largely
by enormous amounts of nucleotide sequence data generated and
deposited in the public databases. It is a science of storing,
extracting, organizing, analyzing, interpreting and utilizing
information for holistic research in biology and
biotechnological product development. India was one of the
first developing countries that had taken a giant step in 1987
and established a Biotechnology Information System Network (BTISnet)
under the Department of Biotechnology (DBT). The
Bioinformatics Centre of Bose institute was established in
1988 as one of the ten nodal centres under this programme for
providing infrastructure support for training manpower in this
emerging area. In 2004 it was recognized as a “Centre of
Excellence” in Bioinformatics. It offers research programs in
various branches of bioinformatics such as Molecular Modeling,
Drug Design, Molecular Evolution, Bioinformatics of Stem Cells
and microRNA, Systems Biology etc.
